Geochelone sulcata

Diet: Herbivore

Lifespan: 80+ years

Range/Habitat: Africa southern edge of the Sahara Desert

Conservation Status: V vulnerable

The African sulcata, also known as the spurred tortoise, is the largest mainland tortoise (not found on an island). These tortoises can burrow underground, some burrows extending over 10 feet deep. The culcata will grow to be up to 36 inches in length and weigh over 150 pounds. Eggs are laid in an excavated nest. Habitat loss to urbanization is the largest threat to this tortoise’s survival. Captive breeding has reduced the number of tortoises captured as pets.
